Legal and ethical definitions

Explain legal and ethical constraints and the role of regulatory bodies:
LEGAL
Copyright: Government giving rights to the original creator of something, so it cannot be copied; usually for an amount of time. This is a constraint as it limits what media can use.
Performing rights: The right to perform music in public. This is a constraint as you are limited to what you can perform and where.
Royalties: Usage-based payments made by one party (the "licensee") to another (the "licensor") for the right to ongoing use of an asset. This is a constraint to whether an asset can continue.
Libel: A printed article that is shown to be a fact and puts someone in a negative light that is untrue. This is a constraint on what can be printed.
Equal opportunities: Everyone treated fairly and allowed the same opportunities not depended on race or anything else. This is a constraint as it is hard to let everyone benefit from everything.
Broadcasting act: Laws on broadcasting. This is a constraint on what can be done and shown.

ETHICAL
Accuracy: Making sure your facts are correct and the truth. This is a constraint as you have to be careful not to offend or having biased opinions.
Offensive material: Shows or articles that cause offence to its viewers. This is a constraint as you have to tread lightly on what is said or written.
Sensationalism: Articles that are over exaggerated to create hype. This is a constraint as a story may be quite unappealing without dramatic input.
Chequebook journalism: When you are paid so a journalist can publish your story. This is a constraint as it is morally wrong and could be untrue.
Privacy: Being allowed to keep things to yourself. This is a constraint as journalists don't always get decent gossip- to write about without snooping.
Representation: How you are perceived by people through someone else, in a good or bad way. This is a constraint as it limits the realism of a piece.
Censorship: Your right of free speech being stopped. This is a constraint as journalists have the right to publish any story but as constained to control public knowledge.
Public right to know: The public deserving to know the truth to a certain extent. This is a constraint as you don't want to cause worry or fear.

Letter to OFCOM
For this task I needed to write a letter to OFCOM to complain about the character Owen Armstrong hitting a 10 year old in Coronation street back in January 2012. Here is is in official format:

Dear OFCOM,
   LETTER OF COMPLAINT

I am writing to complain about the violence used in Coronation street on January 16th 2012. I strongly disagree with the aggression used between characters Owen Armstrong and 10 year old Faye. As for one it is illegal to hit a child that is not your own. They may be trying to relate to real life situations with child violence. But it was to extreme for the time of day it was on and could make many children feel threatened. So much so they could become afraid of their own parents if they don't understand. I am worried that this offensive material will effect many people and is not right, to be shown publicly. Asking you to stop Coronation street from showing this, is a form of censorship I know; but I'm asking if you could make them refrain from showing such things in the future.

Thank you for your time.
Much appreciated

Sarah Parker
